2025 MCHTC

The 2nd Annual Maternal and Child Health Training Conference (MCHTC) was a 5-day training conference organized by TENKI and several partner organizations to equip local healthcare providers with the knowledge and skills they need to prevent, detect, and treat common causes of maternal and infant mortality, including postpartum hemorrhage (PPH), and newborn asphyxia. Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH), excessive bleeding after childbirth, is the leading cause of maternal death worldwide, accounting for approximately 70,000 deaths annually. Newborn asphyxia occurs when when a baby doesn't receive enough oxygen before, during, or after birth, and accounts for approximately 900,000 deaths worldwide each year.

Partners include Healey International Relief Foundation, Helping Children Worldwide, Project Hope, Ministry of Health and Sanitation, SoMK, Embrace International, Tzu Chi, Jhpiego, University of Makeni, Together for Global Health, CHASL, Seed, Kings Global, CHAMPS, Friends of SL, SOS, Sierra Leone National Master Trainers, School of Midwifery, World Health Organization (WHO).

The conference took place at the School of Midwifery in Kenema, Sierra Leone. Over 50 midwives, nurses, and maternal child health aides attended the conference this year. Trainings followed the Jhpeigo Bleeding After Birth Provider Guide, as well as the WHO Essential Newborn Care Provider Guide. Successful trainees who passed the final exam received an honorary certificate of completion. Select trainees graduated to become future Rising Trainers, and will eventually serve as Trainers of the program to render it self-sustainable.
