2025 MCHTC Blog

The 2nd Annual Maternal and Child Health Training Conference (MCHTC) was a 5-day training program organized by TENKI and partner organizations to equip local healthcare providers with the knowledge and skills they need to prevent, detect, and treat postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) and newborn asphyxia. Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is the leading cause of maternal death worldwide, accounting for approximately 70,000 deaths annually. Newborn asphyxia accounts for approximately 900,000 deaths worldwide each year. The MCHTC aims to lower the maternal and infant mortality rate in Sierra Leone by targeting these leading causes of death.

Partners include Healey International Relief Foundation, Helping Children Worldwide, Project Hope, Ministry of Health and Sanitation, SoMK, Embrace International, Tzu Chi, Jhpiego, University of Makeni, Together for Global Health, CHASL, Seed, Kings Global, CHAMPS, Friends of SL, SOS, Sierra Leone National Master Trainers, School of Midwifery, and World Health Organization (WHO).

Over 50 midwives, nurses, and maternal child health aides attended the conference this year. Trainings followed the Jhpeigo Bleeding After Birth Provider Guide, as well as the WHO Essential Newborn Care Provider Guide. Successful trainees who passed the final exam received an honorary certificate of completion. Select trainees graduated to become future Rising Trainers, and will eventually serve as Trainers of the program and render it self-sustainable.

The conference took place at the School of Midwifery in Kenema, Sierra Leone.
